TwickerTape 1.0 for Linux in development

With the Windows version done, I’ve been testing a Linux version of TwickerTape on the new Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 1 this afternoon. The good news is there are only a few minor changes that need to be made (mostly cosmetic) and it should work nicely. Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 1 has a pretty ugly pink desktop background at the moment but the charcoal theme looks pretty good.

I’ll do some more testing and should have the Linux version up soon.

Using Twickertape - No.1 - the speed swipe

tt101If you’re using horizontal scrolling, you can change the speed by clicking and dragging your mouse across the tweet. Drag it at the speed you want it to scroll, let go and voila! TwickerTape will scroll your tweets at that speed. (You can also set it via the SET button and settings window - but that’s the boring the way to do it!)

You can set the vertical scroll speed in the settings window too.

Onwards to version 2…

Okay, now that version 1 is out the door, it’s time to look at building up the features.

I’m really happy for this to be a user-driven kinda thing so if you’ve got ideas of things you’d like to see, drop us a comment or two.

We’re going to try and incorporate colour settings (as in “choose your own colours”) and we’ve got a couple of ideas of our own as well but if you have something you just gotta have in TwickerTape, then speak up, dear friend and let us know.

We can’t guarantee we can incorporate everything but - hey - we’ll give it a shot.

Cheers.

TwickerTape 1.0 is born!

tt101
It turns out I’d actually spent some time doing extra development on this a while ago but never finished it off. So, with some changes over the last few hours, TwickerTape has hit 1.0.

At this stage, it’s a Windows only release - but it will work on Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7 computers - 32-bit and 64-bit.

You can choose side-scrolling or vertical scrolling, as well as set the speed of the scroll.

See a link in a tweet you want to visit? Double-click on it and away you go.

The big difference from previous versions is the new slimmed-down interface - it’s just 30-pixels high so it’ll look cool even on a netbook!

Let us know what you think.

Cheers.

You can grab it here.

Not quite dead yet…

There hasn’t been much life in TwickerTape for the last year or so but as of today, I’m firing up the codeboilers and taking another look at it.

There are a couple of annoying little bugs that don’t look great so I’ll tackle those and also look at some recent - well, relatively recent - requests from users.

Thanks to all those who have tried out TwickerTape and given feedback.

I’ll see if I can give the interface a bit of a spruce up as well… :)

Linux version of TwickerTape now updated to 0.10.39

screenshot01039

All of the features available in the Windows version are now available for Linux user!

TwickerTape is a tiny scrolling Twitter client designed to sit at the top or bottom of your screen and just scroll the latest tweets. You can scroll horizontally or vertically and vertical scrolling can also be controlled by the up and down arrow keys.

See a weblink inside a tweet? No probs - just click on the tweet and the web link will launch in your browser.

TwickerTape will also save your settings and allows you to control the scroll speed vertically and horizontally.

This new Linux 0.10.39 version is compatible with any Linux distro with GTK+ 2.0 or better (which is pretty much all of the major distros released in the last two years!)

You can grab the new version from the DOWNLOAD page.

TwickerTape has only been in existence less than a week but already it’s delivering some pretty decent functionality in a new and unusual interface. So if you’re not happy with the Twitter clients you’ve tried so far, why not give TwickerTape a go? You’ve got nothing to lose and you might just find it a great little Twitter client to have when you still need to be able to do other things…

Another update with another new feature! - Build 0.10.38

Build 0.10.38 introduces the ability to navigate and scroll through tweets in VERTICAL mode using the up and down arrow keys.

The cool thing is that the tweets will still cycle around you but if you’re in a hurry or you missed a tweet, you can use the arrow keys to speed up or backtrack through the tweet list to find the tweet you missed.

It’s blowing our own trumpet, but we definitely think that’s a pretty cool new feature. We’ll be looking to do this in HORIZONTAL scroll mode shortly (one thing at a time…)

We’re working on the Linux version but for the moment, Build 0.10.38 is available for Windows only (2000/XP/Vista/7 Beta).

Grab it from the DOWNLOAD page!

New Build 0.10.36 - new features!

It’s been a busy time at the TwickerTape sweatshop - we’ve been busy ironing out bugs as well as adding a number of new features:

* Press the home key to return you to Tweet #1 i.e the first tweet of your friends list
* There’s also a new “[1]” button to do the same thing with your mouse
* TwickerTape now remembers you scroll settings as well as its screen location (where you place it on your desktop).
* It also now snaps into position with respect to the top of the Task Bar - just click and drag TwickerTape towards the Start/TaskBar and you’ll see what we mean.
* TwickerTape now remembers your username - for security reasons, you still have to type in your password but it makes it quicker and easier to launch.

The new version is available for Windows only (for now) from the Download page! Enjoy.

New version 0.10.3 released - now vertical & horizontal scrolling

win0102We’ve been beevering away adding more features to TwickerTape and we thought it time to update the version number.

We’re not quite ready to call it version 1.0 but we’re pretty close.

This new version is 0.10.3 and the big new feature is the choice of vertical or horizontal scrolling.

The horizontal scrolling looks the same as before - a silky smooth ticker-tape just like you see with the share market reports on TV.

The vertical scrolling displays each tweet for a time of you choosing, then vertical scrolls to the next tweet.

You can choose between the two on the settings window (click Set) and TwickerTape remembers the scroll speed settingss for both directions.

We’ve also made the interface itself fractionally smaller so it takes up less screen space but the controls and text all remain the original size.

At the moment, this bi-direction scrolling is only available on the new 0.10.3 version for Windows. Will update the Linux version shortly.

But for Windows users, you’ve now got the choice for your ticker-tape Twitter feed - you can go horizontal or vertical. Enjoy.

(Thanks to Ian Yates for the vertical scrolling idea - if you have any ideas, drop us a comment below.)

TwickerTape comes to Linux

linux0916

The new side-scrolling ticker-tape Twitter client has now reached Linux!

Same features as the Windows version but now available for any Linux distro with at least GTK+ 2.0 or better.

TwickerTape allows you to see your friends tweets and keep working by using just a small sliver of screen to show you the tweet scroll.

Both the Windows and Linux versions are just 1.1MB to download and are available at the Download tab.
